Combining a mighty injection of vitamins, minerals, protein and healthy fats with an absolutely delicious flavour, Superfood Nut Butter is yet another out-of-the-park hit from The Protein Works and a health foodie's wet dream. The only qualm I had was that the 'butter' is quite thick and crumbly and doesn't work very well as a spread like a regular peanut butter.

Peanut butter has long been the emperor of the nut butter world.

In recent years, however, its monopoly has been lifted by a host of other nut butter spreads which have risen in popularity.

Cashew, almond, walnut, macadamia, hazelnut and Brazil nut butters are now widely available in supermarkets and are not just the reserve of obscure health food shops which sell breast milk and sprout smoothies to lesbians, militant vegans and amateur science-fiction authors who spend their spare time constructing arks in preparation for the apocalypse.

Boasting, in many cases, a richer nutritional profile than peanuts, these newly-popular nut butters are riding the superfood wave which is sweeping into the mainstream.

I know this because they’re cluttering up health and fitness profiles on Instagram – alongside cringy inspirational quotes (FFS, Nelson Mandela didn’t fight Apartheid to have his words slapped onto your topless changing room selfie), videos of random people setting new bench press PRs (no-one cares), and skinny detox teas being hawked by some deplorable lowlife who needs to finance their coke habit (please kill yourself).

And now, taking the nutritional punch of nut butters one step further, we have Superfood Nut Butter from The Protein Works.

Product overview

Superfood Nut Butter is a dense melting pot of nutritional goodness, providing a nut butter which combines almonds, cashews and organic virgin coconut oil with a potent blend of over 23 superfoods.

A 500g tub will set you back £9.99 from The Protein Works website.

Per 100g (1/5 tub), the nutritional values are as follows:

Calories 597kcal
Protein 18.9g
Carbs (of which sugar) 13g (7.2g)
Fat (of which saturates) 50.7g (5.6g)
Fibre 6.3g
Salt 0.53g

As standard with a nut butter, this product provides an excellent source of healthy fats, protein and fibre, making it a fantastic addition to your diet.

Before we even consider the added superfood blend, the combination of almonds, cashews and organic virgin coconut oil is enough to give any health foodie an intense rush of blood to the genital region.

Almonds and cashews are perhaps two of the healthiest nuts available, the former providing a tonne of calcium, magnesium and vitamin E, and the latter being high in zinc, iron and potassium.

Everyone’s new favourite oil, Coconut oil, is also in the mix (in this case cold pressed with no additives or preservatives, thus locking in all nutritional goodness), which is considered to be the healthiest dietary oil available due to its unique saturated fat content (among many other health boosting properties), which is high in Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) and lauric acid.

Read: bloody good for you.

This concoction alone makes your standard peanut butter look like fat dinner lady with a hairnet lining up alongside Michael Phelps in an Olympic swimming final, but we also have the bonus superfood blend.

This nutritonal hand grenade combines over 23 superfoods in a mixture that would make Jamie Oliver cream himself.

This comprises a Super Greens blend, including everything from wheatgrass to spirulina and chlorella, and a Red Berry blend, featuring, among others, goji and guava berry powder.

Needless to say, this provides an exceptional source of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants, which is the ideal solution if you struggle to get enough fruit and veg into your regular diet.

Taste & texture

First off, it’s important to mention that Superfood Nut Butter doesn’t really work well as a spread.

Unlike conventional peanut butter, this butter is quite crumbly and thick, which I suppose is due to the absurd amount of nutritional goodness packed into each serving.

Whatever the reason, don’t try and spread it, it’ll be like trying to enter someone possessed by a demonic spirit – a bloody logistical and ethical nightmare.

Solution: just eat it straight out of the tub with a spoon, because it tastes absolutely delicious.

And besides, I’m pretty sure this is how it was intended to be consumed anyway.

It would also work well blended into a regular whey protein shake to add a few extra nutrients into the mix, but, trust me, you won’t want to dilute its deliciousness in this manner.

Value for money

At just under a tenner for a 500g tub, Superfood Nutter Butter is a lot more expensive than a regular peanut butter you’d pick up from the supermarket.

Obviously – it’s 100% natural and provides a whopping blend of superfoods in addition to the already impressive nut butter and coconut oil mix.

But, as far as organic health-focused nut butters go, this one is comparatively great value, as most branded products of this ilk are similarly priced without the superfood blend.

However, despite getting what you pay for, this somewhat hefty price tag does make Superfood Nut Butter more of a luxury item – great as on occasional treat but not a must-have addition to your dietary regimen.

Superfood Nut Butter from The Protein Works is a health fanatic’s wet dream, providing a mighty injection of vitamins, minerals, protein and healthy fats, and tasting absolutely delicious to boot.

The only qualm I had was that it’s quite crumbly and thick and doesn’t work very well as a spread like a regular peanut butter.
