TPW Protein Mug Cake Mix Review
Everyone has a weakness.
For Achilles it was his gammy heel, for Superman it was Kryptonite, and for Michael Jackson it was a drunk Macaulay Culkin passed out on a bed shaped like a giant rocket ship.
For me – like many others trying to maintain a disciplined diet – a major vulnerability is the looming presence of chocolates and puddings.
I could quite easily demolish an entire Colin the Caterpillar cake in one sitting and think nothing of it.
The recent trend of ‘protein baking’ has gone some way to eliminating these cravings by introducing some healthy protein-infused alternatives.
The latest product to try and fill the long, Colin-shaped hole in my life (could easily be a line in a Stephen Fry autobiography) is the new Protein Mug Cake Mix from The Protein Works.
Let’s see how it stacks up…
Protein Mug Cake Mix is a chocolate-flavoured protein dessert which you can prepare quickly and easily.
It’s essentially a healthy pudding – high in protein and fibre and low in fat and sugar.
To make it, all you need to do is to put two scoops of powder in a mug, add some water, and microwave it for 30 seconds.
This is perfect for people like me to whom a can of beans and some bread would make for a challenging Ready Steady Cook.
Protein Mug Cake Mix is currently available in ‘Rich Choc Fudge’ flavour and comes in 500g, 1kg and 2kg sizes.
As we’ve come to expect from The Protein Works, their Protein Mug Cake Mix is made from 100% natural flavours.
The ingredients list is remarkably small for a product that tastes this good, which is refreshing to see, as I’ve tried a lot of protein desserts recently which are rammed with all manner of crap (Myprotein’s Protein Muffins come to mind), which is pretty sneaky for something that’s aimed at the health-concious market.
The protein blend is excellent, comprising Hydrolysed Whey, Whey Concentrate, Micellar Casein and Egg Albumen.
In addition, the mix includes: oat flour, natural sweeteners and flavourings, fat-reduced cocoa powder, and sodium bicarbonate.
The nutritionals, per 43g serving, are as follows:
|Carbs (of which sugar)||9.9g (3.2g)|
|Fat (of which saturates)||1.9g (0.6g)|
Truly outstanding figures there – believe me, it’s hard to believe you’re consuming 20g+ of protein when eating these!
Taste & texture
These mug cakes are absolutely delicious – easily one of the best protein desserts I have ever tried.
The taste is rich and indulgent and the texture is gooey and silky smooth.
Flavour-wise, these cakes are a little more ‘natural’ tasting than conventional chocolate puddings due to the fat-reduced cocoa powder, although this is barely noticeable.
As I have a massive sweet tooth, I also added in some TPW Chocolate Fudge Zero Syrup to make my cakes extra gooey and sweet.
One thing I would add is make sure you mix the powder and water thoroughly, as occasionally you can find some powder bubbles in the mix after microwaving.
Value for money
A 500g of Protein Mug Cake Mix (11 servings) will set you back £12.99.
This works out at £1.18 per serving – with further savings if you buy the 1kg or 2kg bags.
This is obviously a little more expensive than most products you’d find in the cake isle of your local supermarket, but unlike anything from Mr Kipling or McVitie’s, bingeing on these mug cakes won’t leave you with a double chin and a belly like a half-deflated basketball.
Protein Mug Cake Mix from TPW is an absolutely delicious protein pudding which combines fantastic macros and natural ingredients.
The perfect nutritious snack for anyone with a sweet tooth or a BA Hons in being a greedy little bastard.
